I’m an international student from Zimbabwe studying biology. I only have a semester of studies left. I anticipated to finish my studies this summer because my study permit expires in August. I did have a fundraiser running, however, it did not do well since it was anonymous for my safety and I do not have many community connections here. I was not able to register for my last semester because I have unpaid tuition fees.
I’m first gen and the first woman in my family to travel so far away to pursue an education. My family did not support my decision. I was lucky to have a private sponsor support me, however, they unfortunately passed away. It is nearly impossible for me to raise international tuition plus all the living expenses without any prior planning.
Because my study permit expires soon, I need to show that I have enough money for my living expenses and tuition + unpaid tuition. I have tried everything I know. I cannot get a bank loan because I need a cosignor. I cannot get a private loan because all my jobs have been part time jobs as a student and they require full time employment with a BCID (I do not have one) Right now I’m working as much as I can, full time. I’ve reached out to UVic, various mutual aid groups, religious communities, etc. but I just haven’t been lucky enough.
I’m extremely overwhelmed and scared because I know I’ll have to return home and that will be toxic for my mental health and I will have no option but to marry against my will.
