Help an Afghan family set up a new life in the US
Donation protected
Hi, my name is Michael Thompson and I'm raising money on behalf of my good friend Waliullah Safi to help his family resettle in the United States from Afghanistan.
I met Wali as an Army lieutenant serving in Afghanistan in 2010 when he was assigned to my platoon as an interpreter. I quickly came to know him as a man of exemplary honor and outstanding courage. He became a lifelong friend.
Thanks to his trustworthiness and exceptional skill, Wali was later assigned to elite units including the Army's Special Forces and the Navy SEALs. Wali ultimately served his country and the United States military honorably for more than five years.
Wali immigrated to the United States in 2015 and became a US citizen in 2020. Unfortunately, he was never able to obtain visas for his wife and mother, who remained behind in Kabul. Wali returned home earlier this year in a desperate attempt to obtain visas for his family, which now includes two young children, as it became clear that the Taliban would return to power. They ultimately boarded a refugee flight in the final days of the evacuation effort with significant assistance from friends in the USA.
Wali's family is temporarily living with 13,000 other refugees at Fort McCoy, Wisconsin, while they await processing through the US Customs and Immigration Service. They intend to settle in Austin, where Wali previously resided.
The family came to the United States with only one suitcase and faces significant financial obstacles. All funds raised through this campaign will be donated directly to Wali's family for relocation and living expenses including:
- Securing a rental home for the family
- Purchasing cribs, beds, blankets, sheets, and basic furniture
- Purchasing food and basic kitchen items
- Children's clothing
- Basic medical care
Thank you for supporting a deserving family in their journey to build a new life in the United States.
