Help Alyssa Fight Cancer

This is Alyssa, she is 16 years old. Alyssa is a very sweet and kind girl who loves having fun! She loves being part of the band at school, video games, makeup, trying new foods, and spending time with friends and family. Alyssa is the happiest when she is surrounded by her family. She has a smile that could light up any room. If you need a hand to hold, or a hug she will always be there. We can’t get enough of this sweet girl.

However, life has drastically changed for Alyssa and her family. On November 19, 2020 , was the start to a nightmare no parent ever wants to go through. Alyssa was diagnosed with Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Tumor (DSRCT).

DSRCT is a very rare, aggressive, and fast-growing soft tissue cancer or sarcoma. Some reports indicate only 200 cases have been recorded since the cancer was first discovered in 1989. There is currently no standard treatment nor cure for DSRCT. Most shocking of all, the 5-year survival rate is ONLY 15%. Unfortunately, there aren’t many facilities that specialize in treating DSRCT and very few organizations are established for funding treatment research and increasing awareness of this rare illness.

Her Parents, Esperanza Calderon and David Lopez were shocked and devastated by this news. Her mother Esperanza stopped working to be able to take care of Alyssa due to the intensive regimen of treatments. She is an amazing mother that does all she can to make sure Alyssa is okay. Her father David, has been working a lot of overtime to make ends meet for his family, he is very hard working and a great father to Alyssa.

Alyssa’s parents are desperate to find an effective treatment that will save their daughter’s life. Unfortunately, even with insurance there will still be tremendous out-of-pocket expenses for this family. Alyssa has gone through 2 different Chemotherapy treatments that were not very effective. Since then her tumors have grown and her specialist stated that there’s nothing else they can do. Currently, she is receiving Whole Abdominal Radiation Therapy with no guarantee that the treatment will work for this type of rare cancer. 

Based on other cases with the same diagnosis, Alyssa needs surgery to save her life. There are amazing doctors and surgeons that specialize in DSRCT. Unfortunately, they are all out of state and insurance won’t fully cover consultations or the specialized treatments that Alyssa needs to save her life. With only one income coming in, it would be impossible to secure the funds. Alyssa has already shown an incredible amount of bravery and grace in the face of a disease that has turned her life upside-down.

Esta es Alyssa y tiene 16 años. ¡Alyssa es una niña muy dulce y simpática a la que le encanta divertirse! Le encanta ser parte de la banda de su escuela, los videojuegos, el maquillaje, probar nuevas comidas y pasar tiempo con amigos y familiares. Alyssa es muy felíz cuando está rodeada de su familia. Tiene una sonrisa que podría iluminar cualquier habitación. Si necesitas una mano para apoyarte o un abrazo, ella siempre estará ahí. Nos sobra el cariño y amor de parte de esta dulce niña.

Sin embargo, la vida le ha cambiado drásticamente para Alyssa y su familia. El 19 de Noviembre de 2020 fue el comienzo de una pesadilla por la que ningún padre quiere pasar. A Alyssa se le diagnosticó un tumor desmoplásico de células pequeñas y redondas (DSRCT).

El DSRCT es un cáncer o sarcoma de tejido blando muy raro, agresivo y de rápido crecimiento. Algunos informes indican que solo se han registrado 200 casos desde que se descubrió el cáncer por primera vez en 1989. Actualmente no existe un tratamiento estándar ni una cura para el DSRCT. Lo más impactante de todo es que el porciento de supervivencia en 5 años es SÓLO el 15%. Desafortunadamente, no hay muchas facilidades médicas que se especialicen en el tratamiento de DSRCT y muy pocas organizaciones ofrecen ayuda para la investigación de tratamientos nuevos y aumentar el conocimiento sobre esta enfermedad tan rara.

Sus padres, Esperanza Calderón y David López quedaron conmocionados y devastados por esta noticia. Su madre Esperanza dejó de trabajar para poder cuidar a Alyssa debido al régimen intensivo de tratamientos. Es una madre increíble que hace todo lo que puede para asegurarse de que Alyssa esté bien. Su padre David, ha estado trabajando muchas horas extras para proveer lo necesario para su familia, es muy trabajador y un gran padre para Alyssa.

Los padres de Alyssa están desesperados por encontrar un tratamiento eficaz que salve la vida de su hija. Desafortunadamente, incluso con el seguro médico, aún habrá enormes gastos de bolsillo para esta familia. Alyssa ha pasado por 2 tratamientos de quimioterapia diferentes que no fueron muy efectivos. Desde entonces, sus tumores han crecido y su especialista afirmó que no hay nada más que puedan hacer. Actualmente, está recibiendo radioterapia abdominal completa sin ninguna garantía de que el tratamiento funcione para este tipo de cáncer.

Basado en otros casos con el mismo diagnóstico, Alyssa necesita cirugía para salvar su vida. Hay médicos y cirujanos increíbles que se especializan en DSRCT. Desafortunadamente, todos están fuera del estado y el seguro no cubrirá completamente las consultas o los tratamientos especializados que Alyssa necesita para salvar su vida. Con solo un ingreso en el hogar, es imposible asegurar los fondos. Alyssa ha demostrado ser increíblemente valiente y con muchas ganas de lucha contra una enfermedad que ha cambiado su vida por completo.
