Alondra is a 22-year-old single mom to her 1-year-old son, Leo. For the past two years, I have known Alondra and her family as tenants in the studio apartment in front of my office on Haley Street in Santa Barbara. I watched as Alondra became pregnant, gave birth to Leo, and celebrated his first birthday this October.

A couple of weeks ago, Alondra told me she need to end her lease abruptly. Without sharing too many private details, I learned that she was concerned for her safety and the safety of her son, so she could not stay, even with assistance covering rent. Alondra has moved to a shelter that is helping her access social services, legal support, and childcare, but only while she is a resident there. After this process, she hopes to move somewhere safe and start a new life for herself and Leo.
