Help Alan & Theresa McMaster - Get Care & Last Adventure

Donation protected
Hi, my name is Kate McMaster Martin. I’m a 28-year-old single mom living in Columbus, Ohio, doing my best to raise my daughter and build a stable life. But right now, I’m asking for help for two of the most selfless people I’ve ever known — my grandparents, Allan and Theresa McMaster.

Allan and Theresa are in their 70s, diabetic, and living alone in Calais, Maine — a small town far from the proper medical care they urgently need. My grandfather recently fell and badly bruised his hip. He can barely walk, and my grandma is doing everything she can to help — but she’s fragile too. My grandma has stage 3 kidney failure and will likely need dialysis soon if she doesn’t get the proper care. Until recently, I believed she was already on dialysis — but I have since learned the truth directly from them.

They’re isolated. They’re struggling. And they deserve so much better.

I want to bring them here to Columbus, Ohio, where I can care for them, help manage their medical needs, and most importantly — make sure they’re not alone anymore. But as a single mom still working toward stability in my own life and career, I can’t afford to do this on my own.

These two have spent their whole lives giving to others — raising children and grandchildren, stepping in whenever someone needed them. They cared for my great-grandmother at the end of her life. They’ve never asked for much, but they’ve always given everything. And now, all they want is a peaceful, love-filled chapter in the time they have left.

They also have a dream.

They own a conversion van that they hoped to use to travel the country together — visiting family and seeing the places they never had the chance to while raising everyone else. Some of my fondest childhood memories are of going to flea markets with them, where they shared their love of antiques and meeting new people. They’ve collected treasures for years, now packed into three storage units and their apartment, and they dreamed of selling those items at flea markets along the way. But now, they can’t lift anything, can’t sort it, and they can’t make it happen alone.

I believe in God. I believe in the power of faith. I’ve never created a GoFundMe before — but I believe in this. I believe in honoring the people who sacrificed everything so the rest of us could have a chance. And I believe there’s still time to give them some peace and joy before that chance is gone.

Your donation will help:

  • Move Allan & Theresa from Calais, ME to Columbus, OH

  • Fix and prepare their van so they can safely travel

  • Transport and sort 3 full storage units of belongings

  • Set up a safe and accessible home here

  • Support ongoing medical care and access to specialists

  • Give them the chance to travel and reconnect with family while they still can

If you’ve ever known people who gave everything to others, then you know how much this matters. Even the smallest donation helps. And if you can’t give, please share this with someone who might be able to.

Thank you for reading. Thank you for caring. And thank you for helping me give my grandparents the dignity, love, and joy they deserve.

With love, faith, and deep gratitude,
Kate McMaster Martin
