Jason, the girls and Jason's parents
Abigail, age 10, and Kayla, age 9, are facing significant changes in their lives after the sudden death of their mother, Marian Courtney on April 21, 2021.
Abigail age 10 and Kayla age 9 are facing significant changes in their lives after the sudden death of their mother, Marian Courtney on April 21, 2021. Marian was a single mom raising the girls with the help of her fiancée Jason Watts and her sister Cally Courtney. Marian was a massage therapist and worked full time as the office manager at the family-owned business the Natural Health Resource Center in Palmetto, Florida.
Abigail is a very loving child, when you meet her, she will most likely ask you if you have a swimming pool as she loves to swim. Abigail is a special needs child and requires structured environments and one-on-one assistance with learning and schoolwork. Both Abigail and Kayla have ADHD and learning disabilities. Abigail has learning disabilities in all areas; Kayla’s learning disability is in reading. Abigail is the tomboy and Kayla is the princess. Despite their disabilities, Abigail and Kayla are precious, loving and caring girls.
Marian’s parents are Levi and Yvonne Courtney. Yvonne is trying to keep the family business running while caring for Levi who is battling cancer. Marian was the youngest of 5 girls (Cally Courtney, Pam Courtney, Christine Courtney and Paige Eller). The family has pulled together and is focusing on the next several months; keeping the girls in their familiar environment and finishing the school year at Palm View Elementary. Marian’s niece and her husband are considering adopting the girls. They live on a farm in Myakka and have a daughter age 3. Their home is a small, a 2-bedroom 2 bath, and an expansion would need to be built to accommodate the girls. This takes time and money.
As many of our friends and family know, Marian has struggled with addictions for many years. Marian met Jason six years ago while in a recovery program. Jason has been actively involved in the girls’ life ever since they met. Jason is committed to the girls and our parents and he wants to continue to be in the girls’ lives and help. Jason has been struggling with personal issues and realizes he needs to focus on getting the help he needs. Jason’s mom has come down from her home in North Carolina to help him get the help he needs. Marian’s dog, Finley is also grieving. He was by Marian’s side 24/7 and was with her when she passed away. We will most likely need to find a good home for Finley, he is a white German Shepard/Husky mix.
Here is a list of needs and what we would be using your donation for:
Tutoring for both girls
Day-to-day living expenses
Summer programs
Expansion of the 2-bedroom home to accommodate the girls
College / Trade school funds
Our goal of $10,000 would help offsetting our list of needs. The expansion of the niece’s house will be costly and will take time. Anyone who can donate their time (architect, builder, plumber, painter, roofer, etc.) and building supplies or funds for this project would be greatly appreciate. The monies received will be placed in a checking account for the girls. The account has three family members listed; two signatures will be required to use the funds.
Update May 12th
Yvonne and Paige took Abigail and Kayla to the Camp Osprey for a visit. The girls were able to pick out their bunk beds and toured the entire camp. We have found a tutor for both girls and the tutor will be going to camp a few days a week to help the girls this summer. We cannot thank Nurse Sandy enough for opening up her heart and giving the girls the opportunity to attend camp all summer. The girls have been spending weekends with their aunts and Marian's niece.
Update May 1st
With the help of Jason's mom, stepdad, a good friend and myself (Paige), Jason has committed to an inpatient recovery program on the east coast of Florida and was admitted on May 1st.
Update Aril 30th
With the help of alot of great people we found a new home for Finley. Check out the video of Finley's first day at his new home.
