Help a Veteran Father with Stage 4 Cancer
Donation protected
I am trying to raise money to help my father in his last days. He has extremely limited income and cannot afford the majority of his day to day needs let alone the O2 machine that he needs. He has service related disabilities and is awaiting a decision from the VA but at this point he will likely be dead before he gets what the government owes him. I am doing what I can to help him myself but I've exhausted my own savings and am missing too much work so I am resorting to begging for him and hoping god sees fit to grant some charity to a dying man.
the Above is the short version as to why I am setting up this charity fund, the following is a bit more depth to the back story that I know. If you have the time and wish to know some of the struggles my father has faced recently leading up to his current fate please proceed
He is a good man, a father and husband who served his country until he was honorably discharged, and then spent the rest of his life working ...until he became too ill to be of use to the company he worked for.
At the time he was still working in Colorado his current wife had a brain aneurysm and was hospitalized then required constant home care. He started missing work to care for her and also started becoming ill himself, and the company he had worked for almost 20 years told him (in less lawsuit-able words) that he was too old and missed too much work ....and fired him. He continued to get sicker and being left with no employment and no savings he decided to move back to Idaho at that point, bringing him closer to his children and family here.
After getting out to Idaho and continuing to get sicker he finally contacted the VA for medical care and went in. He was at the time diagnosed with starting liver failure and an unknown bone infection. This led to the the partial amputation of his foot and a massive amount of hospital time. He nearly died and had me planning his funeral. By the grace of god his liver recovered and the infection seemed to be controlled, but as he returned to the struggles of life he noticed himself still getting sicker.
After many rounds of testing as he continued getting weaker they discovered a tumor growing in his lungs. Of course they wanted to biopsy it, then determined it was indeed a malingnat cancerous tumor. They dubbed it stage 1 and then proceeded with radiation treatments.
it was seeming like maybe it had worked, he claimed he felt better and all might be good. But god must have thought it would be amusing to pull a fast one because just as the breathing got easier he took a turn and started getting even sicker and have more breathing troubles. So some more scans and testing and they showed numerous small tumors growing through his lungs (like I had spread after they cut it open for the biopsy or something).
He went through some more scans to ensure that it wasn't in his brain or other organs - it was not so his current prognosis is Stage 4 lung cancer. The doctor at the va told him possibly 6-9 months to live maybe more god willing, and suggested chemo with the hopes that we can keep him around a few more years. He started chemo last week and we will see, in my opinion it seemed to make him sicker and he's having a harder time breathing with the issued O2 condesor the va gave him.
He is in a desperate financial state in his last days, which is not helping him stay positive in his battle with cancer. His ssi barely covers his rent, and the decision on his service related disability is pending and estimated in august-right around the time the initial 6-9 months of life the doctor guessed at will be coming due. Like a cruel cosmic joke , it seems he may die of starvation while smelling the meal he was promised if he just made it home.
I would not ask anyone to take food from their children's mouth to feed my father, his wife, or his dog. I am his son and as my responsibility I'm doing what I can but if you can afford it and are willing to donate anything to help them please do and god bless you.
