On April 27, 2024, the Iraqi Parliament enacted the Anti-Prostitution Law, which imposes harsh penalties on members of the LGBTQ+ community. As a member of the community, Anana, a trans woman, writer, and advocate for LGBTQ+ rights is now threatened with the risk of imprisonment for a period of no less than 10 years due to her gender identity and her advocacy for the rights of the LGBTQ+ community.
Anana lives with a very difficult financial situation after leaving several jobs in which working hours reached 14 hours a day.
Due to the health and psychological risks, abuse in the workplace, and the low wages, Anana was forced to leave work and rely on writing as a primary source of income. However, this was not enough, as she has not received any financial input from writing for more than 7 months.
Now that the retaliatory and repressive law has been enacted, which attempts to justify the killings of members of the LGBT community, as well as their persecution and imprisonment, Anana, as a trans woman and a writer, is at greater risk of arrest and imprisonment than others because she is visible and an activist. Anana needs to flee the country as quickly as possible, but her writing work has not brought her enough income to obtain her daily necessities, or even a travel ticket, or to pay for a visa.
We need this amount to pay for some daily necessities and internal travel, in addition to the ticket price, hotel reservation, and visa, and some savings as well in order to get by.
