Hello, my name is Scott, and I'm setting up this GFM on behalf of my friend to help them with the costs associated with their soon-to-be newborn infant, as well as taking care of their pet dog. We are also asking for donations of specific items for the infant, as well as the dog (a small pug). Scroll down to see the list, as well as instructions for how to organize drop-off or pickup, if you are able to donate any of the listed items.

 

Backstory: my friend (who we will call "D") is a pregnant disabled trans POC, who has been an essential part of our local anarchist community (the area known as Vancouver, BC), and who has recently escaped an abusive relationship. On top of that, D's parents are very religious and deeply conservative (think FOX news, Tucker Carlson, etc.), and D will be relying on them for transportation to the hospital to give birth, as well as for help with babysitting and other childcare needs. As such, D is not able to come out to their parents, and this, combined with the safety concerns of recently escaping their abusive ex-partner, is why they need to stay anonymous and why I'm organizing this GFM for them.

 

Their needs for funds are urgent and ongoing, and certain baby items need to be acquired ASAP (the baby's due date is coming up very soon). As a result of lack of other supports, and the inaccessibility of institutional support (it's been hell trying to navigate government & non-profit bureaucracies), D is experiencing food and housing insecurity, which is exacerbating their multiple overlapping disabilities. It is likely that the precarity of their situation will force them to go back to working shortly after giving birth, which will further increase their dependence on their parents for childcare, and make it harder to take care of their dog, who has played an essential part in helping alleviate the symptoms of one of their chronic health conditions (which has gotten much worse as a result of their ex-partner's abuse).

 

Any amount people can donate is greatly appreciated and will go towards improving D's food & housing security, obtaining goods necessary for the infant (including formula, since D cannot produce milk themselves), and other child and pet care expenses. It would mean a lot to both D and our community if people are able to offer their support.

 

Here is the current list of items D needs. Most of these items can be dropped off at Spartacus Bookstore, but feel free to contact me through here to double-check and we can organize delivery/pick-up if need be. If anyone is willing and able to donate frozen human milk (D is able to get some from a donation program, but still needs more), contact me through GFM. If folks don't have money or any of the needed items, you can still help by signing up for free formula and/or diapers from the websites/companies listed at the bottom, and then dropping them off at Spartacus Bookstore or sending me a message. If you have something infant-related that isn't on the list, message me and I'll let you know if it is needed (D was able to borrow some items, like a baby changing table, bassinet, and stroller from the lovely folks at BabyGoRound here in Vancouver).
