Dear Friends, Family, and Kind Strangers,
My name is Shimmi, and I’m a mom doing everything in my power to protect the person who means the most to me: my daughter.
For the past year and a half, I’ve been navigating a long, difficult custody process. I was granted sole custody but it came with a tremendous cost: over $30,000 in legal fees and nearly $20,000 still outstanding.
This has not been a short fight and the need to protect my daughter has been present for far longer than any court battle could show. Through every challenge, every setback, every overlooked concern…I have stayed determined to give her the safety, peace and stability she deserves.
Recently, new concerns came to light, and because of that, changes were made to her parenting schedule. My daughter is now solely in my home full-time…while the legal process continues to work toward a long term solution for her wellbeing.
Alongside this, my daughter has been diagnosed with severe ADHD and Celiac disease. She now needs ongoing occupational therapy, ADHD focused play therapy, medical care, a strict gluten-free diet and specialized educational support.
Like many parents in high-conflict situations, I’m navigating these challenges largely on my own. Despite the shared responsibility that should exist, I am shouldering most of the emotional and financial weight with child support ordered at just $237/month, while her health insurance premium alone is $300/month, not including the additional therapy and care she needs to thrive.
Though I am remarried to a wonderful, supportive partner, due to court-ordered moving restrictions and financial hurdles, we have not been able to combine households or incomes yet. For now, I am carrying this fight…emotionally, financially and physically…on my own. And I’m reaching a point where I cannot continue without help.
