Help A MLA Family Stay Housed and Start Fresh in Oakland

Donation protected
Hi everyone,

I’m organizing this fundraiser for a wonderful family in our school community who recently returned to Oakland after a very difficult year away.

Carmen and her family had moved to North Carolina in hopes of finding more opportunity—but quickly realized how challenging it was to adjust to a new climate, community, and far lower wages. After months of struggle, they made the brave decision to come back home to Oakland. The journey took four days on the road, and they arrived with almost nothing.

They were able to borrow money to secure a small apartment in the same building where they lived before. Until just last night, they had been sleeping in their car.

Now, they finally have a roof over their heads—but they are in debt from the cost of the move and housing deposit, and they don’t have the basic items they need to settle in. Carmen shared they’re especially in need of essentials for the kitchen and bedrooms, since they couldn’t bring much with them in the car.

This GoFundMe is to help them stay housed, recover from the financial burden of the move, and start rebuilding their lives with stability and dignity.

How you can help:
  • Donate any amount—every dollar goes directly to the family to help cover debt, bills, and home necessities.
  • Donate household items (gently used kitchenware, bedding, furniture, etc.) by contacting Andi via ParentSquare and dropping them off at Maxwell campus.

Let’s come together as a community and help this resilient family get the fresh start they deserve.

Thank you so much for your care and generosity.
