Help a Mayan Family Stay in Their Home and Get a Mother the Surgery She Urgently Needs

My name is Enjoly, and I am asking for help on behalf of a Caqchiquel Mayan family in Guatemala who have become like family to me.

For generations, they have lived on the land passed down through their ancestors. They are hardworking people who have always done everything they could to care for one another. Maria, the mother, is a talented crochet artisan who creates beautiful handmade tops and textiles, while the family works tirelessly to make ends meet.

About a year ago, they made the difficult decision to take out loans using their family home as collateral in order to help one of their sons travel to the United States in search of work. Like many families, they hoped this sacrifice would create a better future and allow him to support those back home.

After arriving in Texas, communication suddenly stopped.

For nearly a month, the family had no idea where he was.

Together we spent weeks calling police departments, hospitals, immigration authorities, detention centers, and bail bond offices, desperately searching for any information. Eventually, with the assistance of a priest and community members, we learned that he had been detained and is currently waiting for his immigration court proceedings in Texas.

During those weeks of uncertainty, the emotional toll became overwhelming.

Maria collapsed from the stress and anxiety and suffered a serious wrist fracture. Today, her wrist has still not healed correctly, and doctors have advised that she now needs surgery. Without treatment, she risks losing proper function in her hand—the same hand she depends on to crochet and support her family.

This tragedy has come during the slow season, when there is very little work and almost no income from her handmade crafts. The family is now facing overwhelming financial pressure:

• Urgent wrist surgery and medical care for Maria.

• Monthly loan payments that put their ancestral family home at risk.

• Daily living expenses while their son remains unable to help from detention.

• Loss of income while Maria is unable to work.

Every donation, no matter how small, will directly help relieve this burden and allow this family to remain together on their ancestral land while Maria receives the medical care she urgently needs.
