As the Center Director and a speech therapist at Growing Connections for Pediatric Achievements, I have had the privilege of working closely with a local family who has shown incredible resilience in the face of ongoing challenges. For over a year, this family—including their young child—has been living in local hotels, paying daily rates that add up to an overwhelming monthly expense. Both parents are dedicated, working full-time jobs and doing everything they can to provide for their child, but the high cost of temporary hotel living has made it impossible for them to save enough for a security deposit and first month's rent to secure an apartment.

Despite these setbacks, the family has remained together, prioritizing their unity and the well-being of their child. They have been hesitant to pursue shelter-based options due to concerns about family separation and a strong sense of responsibility to maintain their family unit. Currently, they are on several waitlists for housing assistance, but because they are able to pay for hotel stays, they are not prioritized for support. The primary barrier preventing them from moving into stable housing is the upfront cost of the deposit and first month's rent.

Over the past several months, I have provided ongoing support and advocacy for this family. However, we recognize that a collaborative effort is needed to create lasting change.
