Help a Haitian Mother and Young Son Secure Protective Status

Donation protected
We're looking to raise money to cover the legal representation for a young, single Haitian mother, Maggie, and her son hoping to secure their protective status to live in the United States after President Biden’s term.

Donald Trump has already promised to end protections for immigrants from Haiti, and an administrative playbook for the next Republican administration has called for pulling back the Temporary Protective Status (TPS) program. This could mean the early termination of Maggie and her son’s protective status with no option for renewal.

What is Temporary Protective Status(TPS)?
Temporary Protected Status (TPS) is a temporary immigration status that allows some Haitians to work in the United States and be protected from deportation. TPS is granted by the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to eligible foreign-born individuals who are unable to return home safely due to certain conditions.

TPS recipients receive temporary protection from deportation and authorization to work in the United States. During a designated period, TPS holders are not removable from the U.S. and not detainable by DHS on the basis of his or her immigration status.

What will the money go to?
A local attorney who specializes in the complex immigration process has been obtained to assist Maggie and her son. All donations raised will cover the following:
  • Legal representation for Maggie and her son
  • Additional legal fees

Their Story
Maggie, is a single mother from Haiti, who endured unimaginable hardships on her journey to safety and freedom. After fleeing violence and instability in Haiti in 2015, she relocated to Brazil, where she faced discrimination, unsafe working conditions, and eventually gave birth to her son.

In 2021, fearing for their lives due to civil unrest, Maggie embarked on a five-month, perilous journey through ten countries to reach the United States. She faced extreme conditions, including hunger, illness, and threat of gang violence, all while caring for her young son.

Despite suffering from a serious health condition and even witnessing him nearly drown, Maggie's determination to give her child a better life kept her going. Despite the numerous obstacles, they has remained resilient. Upon entering the United States, they turned themselves into the authorities and were jailed. Maggie and her son then sought a hearing before a judge and were granted temporary protective status.

Eventually, they found temporary refuge in the States, where they were supported by a local congregation. Maggie and her son have temporary shelter in a home of one of the congregants. Maggie's social security card was granted, making her a tax-paying individual. Now with work authorization, she holds a part-time job while attending school to support her small family.

We are currently raising funds to cover legal representation to help Maggie navigate this complex process and secure the documentation she needs. Your support will make a significant difference in ensuring her and her son’s chance to live safely in the U.S.
