Help a Father Protect His Daughter’s Future

Ever since I was a kid, I knew I wanted to be not just a father, but a dad. Fourteen years ago, my prayer was answered and God blessed me with a daughter who changed my life in every possible way.

My name is Jason. I’m a single father to an intelligent 14-year-old daughter, and I’m doing everything I can to secure the best possible future for her.

Over the years, I’ve taught her how to ride a bike, express herself verbally, how to channel her feelings into art, and how to create her own worlds through drawing and animation. She’s bright, creative, compassionate, and full of life. She’s a young woman on the autism spectrum with dreams as big as her heart and aspirations that refuse to be limited by labels or assumptions.

When she was about three, we noticed something was off with her speech. A few months later, she was diagnosed with autism. Since then, we have worked together through several schools and therapists to ensure she had every opportunity to overcome challenges and thrive.

Now, she’s a straight-A student in general education classes, loved by her teachers and peers, an aspiring artist determined to build her own unique future. Like any teenager, she dreams of growing up, working in voice acting and animation, driving her own car, going to college, working in a career she loves, and living life on her own terms.

She wants what every teenager wants: the chance to grow up, make her own choices, build a meaningful career, and live a life that’s truly hers.

Why I’m Asking for Help:

Right now, I’m in the middle of a heartbreaking legal battle.

This situation is deeply personal for all of us, because it challenges the very independence she’s worked so hard to build.

A petition has been filed asking the court to declare that our daughter legally ‘requires substantial care and personal supervision because of a mental or physical disability and will not be capable of self-support’ for the rest of her life. All of this despite her continued progress and evidence of ability to achieve these goals as she reaches adulthood.

If this happens, our daughter could lose the right to make her own medical, financial, and personal decisions as an adult, essentially being treated as a permanent minor in the eyes of the law. It could take away her voice and her freedom before she even has the chance to exercise them.

If granted, this ruling could mean she could lose:

Beyond that, such a ruling could create a public record labeling her as incapable of self-support, making it harder for her to get a driver’s license, credit cards, financial aid, housing, jobs, or even vote.
