For this family of five, life was upended when the parents were arrested earlier this week—nearly three years after crossing the U.S. border outside of a designated port of entry in 2022. Living in D.C., they had worked hard to build a stable life—juggling multiple jobs, raising three young children, and giving back to their community—only to have it all suddenly torn apart.

Although they immediately turned themselves in to immigration authorities upon arrival, were released under humanitarian parole, and have since filed for asylum and been granted Temporary Protected Status, they are now facing criminal charges under 8 U.S.C. § 1325. This law criminalizes entry into the U.S. outside of an official port of entry, even for those seeking asylum. This seems to be the first time this law has been enforced in the D.C. area—especially so long after the family’s initial arrival.

Since settling in the U.S., the couple has done everything they can to contribute. They’ve worked tirelessly to support their three young children, volunteered with a local mutual aid group to assist newly arrived immigrants, and even helped organize a holiday party for their neighbors. Fortunately, they have the support of their community, including several U.S. citizens who deeply value them and recognize the positive impact they have made. Thankfully, a federal judge in D.C. ordered their release on March 12, 2025. However, their struggle is far from over—they must still travel to El Paso, Texas, for a federal court hearing in mid-April, an unexpected and costly burden.

Their already fragile financial situation has been further strained since their arrest, as they have been unable to work. On top of travel and living expenses, they and their children are struggling with the emotional trauma of being separated and witnessing the arrest firsthand. Psychological support will likely become an ongoing expense as they try to recover from this distressing experience.

Para esta familia de cinco, su vida dio un vuelco cuando los padres fueron arrestados a principios de esta semana, casi tres años después de cruzar la frontera de EE.UU. fuera de un puerto de entrada designado en 2022. Viviendo en D.C., habían trabajado arduamente para construir una vida estable, equilibrando múltiples trabajos, criando a tres niños pequeños y apoyando a su comunidad, solo para verlo todo desmoronarse de repente.
