I’m Alana, I’m an organizer in the domestic worker movement, and every day I have the privilege of working with courageous nannies, house cleaners, and home care workers who are raising their voices to win dignified working conditions for some of our country’s most essential workers.

Janeth is one of those leaders. She is a house cleaner, an immigrant from Guatemala, and since she became involved in the domestic worker movement, she has quickly become one of our most powerful and active leaders in Virginia. She recently graduated from a leadership training program to develop her organizing skills, she has bravely told her story to elected officials to influence change, and she actively works to help other workers know and enforce their workplace rights.

I created this GoFundMe because today Janeth urgently needs our help.

Janeth immigrated to the United States in order to save her life. After suffering a series of brutal assaults by her ex-partner that left her unconscious and hospitalized, she fled to the United States. She came here, as a survivor of gender-based violence, with hope for protection and a life free of violence.

Returning to Guatemala is not an option, it would put her life in grave danger.

Janet is in urgent need of financial support to hire a lawyer to represent her before an upcoming court hearing.

Her final hearing is in February, and she needs to raise $10,000 before then to secure quality legal representation. For months, Janeth has sought out pro bono options, but no organization has had the capacity to take on her case.

The need for $10,000 is broken down to:
  • $5,000 needed by *this* Friday, December 19, in order to sign the contract with the law firm.
  • Two $1,500 payments, one in January and one in February, to pay for appointments with the lawyer and case preparation.
  • Additional funds (between $2,000-$5,000 more) needed for a likely appeal if her asylum case is denied

By donating to this GoFundMe, you are giving Janet an opportunity for legal representation that will increase her chance of a successful outcome at her court hearing.

Janeth staying in the United States is critical for her safety, and it will allow her to continue her important activism in the domestic worker movement. By donating, you are supporting a remarkable community leader who has centered her life in this country on empowering other immigrant workers.

Please donate as generously as you can, every dollar makes a difference.
