Neighbors helping Neighbors

On April 28, 2021, Mary A. Jones suffered a devastating house fire in which she and her daughter lost their home and everything they owned, including three of their pets. At the time of the fire, the community rallied for her and between the support of the Red Cross, her neighbors, and insurance, she was on her way to getting her home rebuilt.

Tragically, the family employed what turned out to be a disreputable home repair contractor. The contractor received 66% of the home insurance proceeds and left the project undone. Only about 45% of the work needed was ever completed. It’s hard to imagine someone would do that to a 90-year-old widow on a fixed income but as a result, she and her daughter continued to be displaced from their home while still paying taxes and utilities.

The Good News!

Mary and daughter have been living with incredibly kind neighbors from their immediate community for the past two years. During that time, progress has been made to find sufficient funds from the remainder of the home insurance and with the generous commitment of a local home builder, Mary’s home is currently being renovated. They expect/hope the home will be prepared for occupancy in early May. Four long years later, Mary may finally be able to go home.

Use of GoFundMe Funds

Mary is on a fixed income, social security, and a small pension from her late husband. As a committed caregiver for her mother, Mary’s daughter does not work outside the home at this time. Any proceeds collected will make sure the renovation project crosses the finish line. This includes flooring and trim work, necessary furniture/appliances, and some help to offset utility expenses and taxes.
