The Why:
Young Australians are at more risk of death by suicide than skin cancer, yet we know comparatively little about the processes that leads to suicide and how and when to effectively intervene. We know first hand that unless our young people and particularly our young men can receive the support they need WHEN they need it we will continue to lose them.

Which is why now more than ever before it is vital that we have adequate funding and supports in place to provide early intervention, mental health education and continue to de-stigmatise speaking out about mental ill health. The best way to do this is through peer to peer support - real conversations with real people with real stories who can have real connections.

The Statistics:
Mental Health affects everyone and mental ill health affects many, if not directly we all know someone who is or has been affected. Here are some astounding statistics for you:
* 1 in 5 Australians experience mental ill health in any year
* Almost half experience a mental illness in their lifetime
* 75% of mental health disorders emerge before the age of 25.
* Suicide is the leading cause of death for young people in Australia
* 1 in 5 young people who attend a headspace Centre have experienced suicidal ideation.
* Mental illness now has an approximate $12.2 to $39.1 billion per annum cost to the economy through reduced productivity and participation, with around 2.8 million working Australians having a mental illness. This can impact on workplace participation, absenteeism, presenteeism, culture and personal safety. It has flow-on effects for broader communities.

headspace Dubbo is seeking your support to raise much needed funds to bolster and grow the existing service to enable us to reach more young people in more places and to provide education and resources to all schools, businesses and training institutions in our region. The funds raised through the 'headshave for headspace Dubbo' will be used to train and support a group of Youth  Ambassadors who come from your community. Young people who have lived experience and who have faced adversities and who have sought the help they needed and who can now assist other young people in opening up and navigating the supports.

The Youth Ambassadors will be trained in mental health and drug and alcohol first aid as well as safe story telling. They will also be supported in identifying and achieving their educational and vocational goals working towards long term sustainable employment whilst also advocating for youth mental health in the various contexts they are participating in such as school, work, TAFE or Uni.
