In the winter of 1968 three hull trawlers sank in arctic waters. The loss of 58 men devastated Hessle Roads close-knit fishing community and prompted the fishermen's wives to take action. They marched on the street campaigned media and drew the world's attention to their cause - the reform of an industry that was literally killing men off.
In the course of just a few weeks the women leading the campaign- Lil Bilocca, Yvonne Blenkinsop, Christine Smallbone and Mary Denness - chnged the course of history. They confronted the power of trawler owners, exposed the appalling risks and injustices of the deep sea fishing industry, and brought about safety reforms that would save many lives at sea.
Our campaign nearly 60 years on, is to create a statue that honours the achievement of these four remarkable women. Working class women in a male dominated industry step out of the shadows to confront prejudice, power and injustice. Their determination and passion is an inspiration to all. Please give what you can to this cause large or small, your donation will help towards the creation of a statue that will acknowledge their achievement and inspire the next generation of powerful women.
So far we have raised just over £7,500.
