Hi, my name is Nancy. I recently travelled to Uganda, and had the privilege to spend time at a volunteer-run children’s orphanage that completely changed my perspective on life. The 85 children living there are the most kind, intelligent and respectful children I’ve ever met. Even with so little they welcomed me like family with smiles, dancing and so much love.

Seeing their reality was emotional. This orphanage survives only through donations and the dedication of a handful of local volunteers. There’s no government support, no steady income… just the generosity of people who care.

Some of the children have only one outfit to wear. Many don’t have bedding to survive the cold nights. Food runs low far too often. And yet, imagine they still offered me a huge bowl of rice and chicken. Their manners, their gratitude, and their determination to learn were genuinely inspiring. Their school is just a tiny room attached to the space where they sleep, but they show up every single day with excitement and hope.

I promised myself — and them — that I would help. I’ll be going back in person to make sure the children receive the essentials they desperately need.
