A huge thank you to King County Council Member Rod Dembowski for supporting the effort with additional community funds from King County.
Please help us raise $1500 for sign fabrication and a public ceremony to unveil HAYASHI AVENUE at the 28th Ave NE block that runs in front of our Lake City Library and Community Center.
The Hayashi Family farm once sat on the land adjacent to 28th, now occupied by Bank of America. The "Lake City Farm," owned by Shizuo and Yaeko Hayashi, sold fruits and vegetables on the very location of our Lake City Farmers Market. They were active members of the community and donated trees to the very first public grounds in Lake City, where the Lake City School was built. We want to celebrate them and acknowledge the injustice they suffered.
We hope you'll join the group of community partners who have the great fortune of working with the full support of the descendants of Shizuo and Yaeko. We hope to bring awareness and education around the tragic internment of the Hayashi Family who were victims of racial and social injustice during WWll. Hayden Bixby, Chris Leverson, Mark Mendez and Molly Humphrie have been working on the many facets of this project, following the DOT guidelines for Honorary Street Naming. We have received strong support from members of D5 Council Member Debora Juarez's office who are helping to draft the Resolution that will be brought before the Seattle City Council for approval at the first meeting during Phase 3.
We are hoping to have funds in place by the end of July so that the signs will be ready for installation as soon as the Council passes the Resolution.
