Hi, I'm Helen and I'm raising funds for a Little Free Library in the Triangle between Alzey Gardens and Aldwickbury Crescent. I think this is a great place for one, given the passing footfall from the schools and all the local community.
What is a Little Free Library? A Little Free Library is a free book-sharing box where anyone can take a book or share a book. They work on an honour system. A 30-second introduction video is available here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIwh6TzYc70
I've got approval from the council for the Little Library to be installed and have had a structure built by a lovely local craftsman (see below picture). So the council is ready to put it up, but I would love to raise funds towards the cost of the structure and have community buy in for the project.
- £150 was the cost of the Little Library (which I have paid).
- + £50 would also pay for an official registration with the Little Free Library organisation, which would put it on their map, supporting their great cause.
- Any additional funds will be used to pay for maintenance, e.g. varnish. It would also give us the option to buy books - I'm thinking that given it's close to several schools we would have 1 row of adults and 1 row of children's books. I've already set plenty aside to get us underway, but have limited children's books at the moment.
And some more information...
How are the libraries maintained? Each Little Library has a primary caretaker, called a steward. The steward takes care of basic maintenance, like keeping the library clean and inviting, but it is up to everyone who uses the library to keep it stocked with good books. My proposal would be to have 2-3 stewards responsible for maintaining the library and these would be local residents.
How could you get involved? As well as donating funds, I'm looking for 1-2 stewards to help me maintain the box - so please get in touch if you'd like to volunteer for this (low effort and I think high reward)!
How many Little Libraries are there? There are more than 150,000 registered Little Free Library book- sharing boxes in 120 countries worldwide. Little Free Library is a trademark and not all lending libraries will be registered with the organisation, so there are likely to be many more. There are currently 2 Little Libraries registered in St Albans and more in the surrounding towns.
