At some point in the early hours of the morning - probably in the wind, rain and darkness, I'll be heading back up Pen Y Fan for the sixth or seventh time. My legs will be exhausted, I'll probably be questioning my life choices, and the only thing that will keep me going is remembering why I'm doing it.
On 9-10 May, I'll be taking on Ten Y Fan - climbing Pen Y Fan 10 times in 24 hours.
Pen Y Fan is the highest mountain in South Wales, and climbing it once is an achievement in itself. Ten Y Fan takes that challenge and multiplies it - up and down the mountain again and again over a 24 hour period - through the evening, through the night and into the next day. Completing all ten climbs means covering around 40 miles and an elevation gain similar to climbing Mount Everest.
It's going to be tough - physically and mentally.
But Pen Y Fan isn't just any mountain to me. I've always loved being in the mountains, and Pen Y Fan in particular has always held a special place in my heart. In 2023 I volunteered at Ten Y Fan with big moose - cheering people on as they took on this huge challenge. Watching people push themselves through the night, supporting each other, raising money for incredible causes. it was genuinely inspiring. I remember standing there thinking: "One day, I want to do this". So this year, I finally am.
I'm taking on Ten Y Fan to raise money for two Cardiff charities doing incredible work.
The first is big moose charity, where I'm proud to be an ambassador. big moose exists to help people struggling with their mental health get fast, accessible therapy and support them when they need it most. Their mission is simple but powerful: to make sure nobody has to face their darkest moments alone.
I'm also raising money for REST (Repatriation Services Trust), a charity that supports families facing the devastating experience of losing a loved one abroad. Alongside grief, families are often faced with complex logistics and huge costs to bring their loved ones home. REST provides guidance, emotional support and financial assistance so families can bring their loved ones back and say goodbye with dignity.
Both charities support people during some of the most difficult moments life can bring.
So when I'm halfway up the mountain in the middle of the night, exhausted and wondering how I'm possibly going to climb it again, I'll be reminding myself why I started. Every step up that mountain will be for the people these charities support.
If you're able to donate - whether it's the cost of a coffee or a little more - it would mean the world. Your support will help these charities continue their vital work supporting people when they need it most.
Wish me luck - I think I'm going to need it!
