Hands to Belize: Help support Marquette OT and Logan's Trip

My name is Logan Ashenhurst and I am in my fifth semester of pursuing my doctoral degree in Occupational Therapy (OT) from Marquette University.

This May, six students and I will travel to Belize with Hands to Belize to provide therapy services for children and families in need. Under the direction of Dr. Robin Zappin of Alvernia University, Marquette OT students and faculty will make their first trip (of hopefully, many) to The Inspiration Center, located in Belize City. Belize is a country that does not have any occupational therapists; we hope to make a great impact in the five days that we will be working in the clinic. On top of providing rehabilitation and education, Marquette has donated adaptive toys for the OT department to bring to children who have physical, intellectual, or developmental disabilities. Hands to Belize is a collaborative effort between the physical, occupational, and speech-language therapy departments of Alvernia University, the University of Pittsburgh, Misericordia University, Bellarmine University, and Marquette University. Hands to Belize's mission is to provide education through sustainable rehabilitation based on the needs of several community partners in Belize that serve children, adults, and older adults with physical, cognitive, or developmental disabilities. We aim to provide community-based global learning to our international community partners and US-based educational institutions, fostering a global learning community. University students learn valuable clinical and interpersonal skills while helping to meet our community partners' needs through hands-on service learning. Our next trip is scheduled for May 2025.
