Hamro Ekiden for Team Sankalpa & Gurkha - The Untold Truth

This year Hamro Ekiden fundraising campaign will be supporting two charities/projects Team Sankalpa and Gurkha - The Untold Truth. Charities chosen by Hamro Run Club community.

The event is scheduled to take place in Folkestone Nepalese Community Centre, Kent, on the 8th and 9th August 2025.

Sankalpa is a non-profit organisation dedicated to compassion and care. Its mission is to provide essential medical treatment and humane support to animals in need, while also extending aid to vulnerable and destitute individuals within the community. Driven by empathy and a deep sense of social responsibility, Sankalpa works tirelessly to create a world where both animals and humans are treated with dignity, compassion, and kindness.

In addition, we’re committed to supporting the ongoing fight for Gurkha justice. Many Gurkha veterans who retired before 1997 receive pensions up to five times lower than their British counterparts, despite the UK’s promise of equal treatment. In 2021, some veterans were forced to stage hunger strikes outside Downing Street, demanding fair treatment. Yet, years later, the Ministry of Defence continues to delay action, seemingly waiting for time to take its toll rather than addressing this clear injustice.

This issue hits close to home for many of us in the Hamro community. That’s why we’ve decided to allocate 25-30% of the total funds raised through the Ekiden to support a small team who are creating a documentary to Gurkha Justice.

About the event

This is our 4th annual Hamro Ekiden event - unique fundraising campaign to support our chosen charity in fulfilling its mission and values. This campaign takes the form of a 24 hour half marathon relay a true test of endurance, teamwork, and spirit.

Throughout the day and night, runners will take turns completing half marathons in pairs or small groups. At the end of each leg, a 'sash' style baton will be handed over to the next team, symbolising unity and continuity.

The concept is inspired by Japan’s iconic Hakone Ekiden, an annual university relay race where teams of 10 runners cover a combined distance of approximately 220km. It's one of the most unique sporting events in the world, celebrating teamwork, determination, and shared achievement.

Drawing from this tradition, we’ve created our own version with a twist to bring people together, push boundaries, and raise vital funds for a meaningful cause.
