Refugee Relief

Dear friends and family ...

Many of you know Scott and I traveled to Uganda in February of 2018.  We spent part of our time vacationing and part of our time doing work at Refugee camps in northern Uganda.  Most of the refugees we met had fled South Sudan.  They were forced from their homes, their jobs, their friends and family due to a civil war.

We were changed forever.  So much so, that Scott quit his job and is working full-time (pulling no salary other than some side-work he is doing for a friend – thank you Jonathan Fisher!) to build a non-profit called Refugee Relief.  It's so heartening to see Scott’s spirit and desire to help those fleeing their homes to find safety and sustenance.

While I want to bring dignity to the children I met, please do take a moment to zoom in and look at the lovely children in my photos.  Please see the beautiful shining faces and look closely at their clothes.  They are clean, but you can see their clothes are threadbare.

The baby I'm holding, I gladly happily held for three hours.  I noticed early on that she had no diaper.  I thought quite a bit about the logistics of what I thought was an inevitable pee or poop.  None came.

After three hours she started rooting around for her mama's breast.  Please look at her chapped, parched lips.  I took the baby to the beautiful woman who was working tirelessly.  She looked at me somewhat embarrassed and explained that she wasn't making much milk.  She washed her breasts (to keep her baby safe from infection) and tried to nurse without much success.

This woman was clearly starving.  Many of the children had distended stomachs, most had torn or no clothing.  They all had joy and hope.  I majored in international affairs and was taught “teach a man to fish.”  That’s an awesome concept if there’s a lake around.  These people are in a desert where vegetation just doesn’t happen.

Scott is in the process of coordinating logistics.  An organization has donated a forty-foot container of food.  He needs to travel back to Uganda to meet with potential partners who will transport, store and distribute the meals.

We believe Scott's month-long trip will cost roughly $3000 with airfare, lodging, transportation.  He's leaving in January and we are going on faith.  Scott has quit his job, we have had some generous donors and friends, we're using $500 of our savings.  We've sold a sound system and a bedroom set to raise funds.  To date, this totals $1280.  We need $1720 more.

Please consider donating.  $5, $10, $15 or more.  As we are in the process of selling off items (thank you, Keith McCormick, for donating your loveseat and couch.)  If you are in Spokane and have some gently used furniture or electronics that we could sell on craigslist, that will help too.

Most of all send prayers and thoughts of encouragement to the people we encountered and will meet along the way.  I especially pray for Scott’s safety while he travels.

Each of you can give something.  Thoughts, prayers, encouragement, money or “stuff” you no longer need.

Blessings to you all!
