Myself and Brittany are two final year student children’s nurses from Liverpool John Moore's who recently been selected for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to volunteer as student nurses in Uganda this autumn with the charity Knowledge For Change. Out of many applicants, only 8 students were chosen, and we’re proud to be the only two representing children’s nursing. The rest of our cohort will be supporting adult care — but we’ll be focusing on what matters most to us: caring for babies, children, and young people in resource-limited hospitals and communities.

As part of this experience, we’re aiming to take over much-needed paediatric medical equipment that we will donate directly to the teams we work with in Uganda. This includes essentials like:

.Paediatric blood pressure cuffs

.Oxygen saturation probes for infants

.Thermometers

.Resuscitation aids (e.g. neonatal bag-valve masks)

.Wound care materials

.Hand hygiene resources

.Educational posters and teaching tools

In many of the hospitals we’ll be working in, these items are in critically short supply — and in some cases, not available at all. We would like to take over as much equipment as possible with us and also will be looking to buy toys, colouring books and many other children's resources to take with us to donate to schools, hospitals and many other services we will be spending our time in.
