In 2009, Marsha McVicker decided to adopt a child from an orphanage in Haiti. The process of adopting was a difficult one for her. Even though she owned her own business and was financially stable, there were very few places from which she could adopt because she was single and over the age of 35. This is when she discovered Fondation Enfant Jesus, who ran the orphanage where her now six-year-old son, Max, was located. Marsha visited the orphanage in Haiti a number of times before she was able to bring Max home. She fell in love with the organization's mission and vision because they work to support the community through education, entrepreneurship and health. Since Marsha is an entrepreneur herself, this was an important mission for her to support. Fondation Enfant Jesus supports local businesses and runs clinics and orphanages with the goal to create healthy, happy and self-sustaining communities in Lamardelle and Kenscoff, Haiti.
Max and Marsha just celebrated their 5th year together on November 15th, which they call "Gotcha Day". As we can all remember, the terrible earthquake that destroyed many communities in Haiti hit on January 12, 2010, just two months after Marsha brought Max home. After this, the two have continued to be activily involved in helping Max's former home community. Marsha currently serves as a Board member for Fondation Enfant Jesus and sends donated supplies throughout the year.
Haitian communities are still dealing with the aftermath of terrible storms and the earthquake. Fondation Enfant Jesus has a critical situation in one of the communities they support. The retaining wall that is holding up the clinic and the school is eroding away due to the new topography created after terrible storms and the earthquake. In addition, one of their schools lost a major sponsor and is at risk of closing. The amount of money needed to rebuild the wall and foundation, in order to keep the buildings safe for those who use them, is estimated at around $150,000. Multiple fundraising efforts are being created to help raise money for this project. All proceeds will go directly towards construction on this project. Here is a picture of the retaining wall. Please help Marsha and Fondation Enfant Jesus continue to make a difference in Haiti.
