We are a group of acrobatic gymnasts from Gymstars Gymnastics Club in Wexford, many of whom are on the Irish National Acrobatic Squad and we are going to run 1000km during the month of February 2021 to raise some much needed funds. Unfortunately, Acrobatic Gymnastics in Ireland receives no funding whatsoever and due to Covid-19 we have been unable to fundraise in the manner we normally do, and this is money that we heavily rely on to further our development as gymnasts in our beloved sport.
We also recognise that many local causes have a similar issue to us in that they cannot do any of their normal fundraising. With that in mind we have decided that we want to donate 50% of all money raised to Wexford Women’s Refuge who are hopeful that building will commence in the next few months of 12 apartments for women and children. While the build itself is government funded, money still needs to be raised for the necessary supports required to facilitate all needs such as counselling, childcare, educational programmes and the application of safety orders. It should not be forgotten that Wexford Women’s Refuge serves all of Wexford county and not just Wexford town and the work they do is second to none.
We may not be able to go anywhere right now, but, as gymnasts we have some very big goals and these goals do not come cheaply. We cannot train at the moment which does not help our drive and our motivation, so we have decided to do this challenge to maintain our focus and fitness and to also help us to reach our goal of competing at World and European Championships in the near future, while at the same time raise some money for a very worthy local cause.
Covid-19 may have crushed our dreams in 2020 and into 2021, but we are determined that it will not strip us of our chance to get back to doing what we do best (as soon as we can) and to achieve the highest accolade of representing our club and country.
All the gymnasts taking part in this event will track their respective runs and we will keep you updated here and on our Instagram page @gymnastswithgoals. We would like everyone to feel part of our journey by contributing what you can to our joint fundraiser and sharing our campaign online to further our reach. We are especially calling on all supporters of our sport to get on board.
Tough times don’t last, but tough people do.
Thank you.
