Support My Father’s Fight Against Cancer

Hello, my name is Alexander and I’m reaching out with a heavy heart to share my father’s story. My father David Hatch has been fighting Non-Hodgkin lymphoma since 2022, and him and my mother are facing many challenges currently as a result of this battle with cancer

A Little About My Father:

David is an incredible person who has always been there for our family. He is known for his generosity, kindness, hard work and sense of humor and has always been the first to help others in need. Whether it’s offering a helping hand, sharing wisdom, or providing unwavering support, he’s made a positive impact on so many lives.

After David retired from a full career at GE lighting plant in Winchester Virginia, he took some years to himself in retirement. He then decided to become a bus driver for the local county school system. He really enjoyed working with the school system. He says he loved the people he worked for as well as the kids he was serving. My dad has always been a big proponent of community service. After only performing his duties as a bus driver for a couple years, due to his overwhelming health concerns, he had no other choice but to retire and embark on the road to recovery.

The Diagnosis:

He began his fight with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma cancer in 2022 and underwent radiation treatments for almost a year here in Winchester as a result. He then received the " all clear of cancer scan" in October 2023 which felt like such a blessing to all of us. Then unfortunately In May 2024 he began experiencing heart palpitations and extremely low blood pressure with a chance finding ER visit, showed the cancer was not only back but had also spread into his liver/pancreas area. Since May of 2024, my dad has been to the ER 5 times and spent countless nights in the hospital, many of which we were unsure if he would make it. He has been undergoing Chemotherapy and Immunotherapy at John Hopkins since August 2024 and is still undergoing treatments that appear to be productive as the mass has been steadily reducing in size since treatments began. His days are spend in bed mostly sleeping as he has been extremely tired. Sometimes he seems to sleep for days on end. When he is feeling able, he likes to tinker in his garage and play legos and he reads a lot.

While this diagnosis has shaken our family, we remain hopeful and determined to fight alongside him every step of the way. However, the treatment process has been physically and emotionally draining, and it comes with substantial medical, transportation and lodging costs that are difficult to manage on top of the challenges my parents already face.
