Reunite Migrant Families, Poughkeepsie, New York, started 18 months ago in response to family separation at our southern border. Our group marches every Thursday to advocate for reuniting migrant children with their families and for the closing of horrific detention camps.
Seven members of Reunite Migrant Famlies are going to the Brownsville Texas/Matamoros Mexico border January 12, 2020:
Val Carlisle, Adele Mauriello, Muriel Horowitz, Beverly Kaufman,
Anahi G. Lipton, Christopher Duncan, Diane Boujikian
The sustained witness action to highlight the growing humanitarian crisis among refugees and asylum seekers begins on January 12, 2020 and will continue until the MPP Migrant Protection Protocol policy and process are overturned.
The protest will:
● Bring attention to “MPP” the Migrant Protection Protocols. Parents, seeking a better, safer life for their children, are being sent back into very dangerous conditions in Mexico. Parents and children are living in a sea of tents and tarps, some patched together with garbage bags. Others sleep outside in temperatures that recently dropped to freezing.
●Protest the tent courts in Brownsville, Texas, where asylum seekers are taken to give their initial plea before a judge who is present only via the Internet. They have virtually no access to legal counsel or instruction on the process.
● An estimated 2,000 migrants at Matamoros alone and many thousands in other cities and locations wait on the Mexico side of the border. They come from Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Mexico and other countries. They lived for months in makeshift shelters waiting for their turn.
● Some of us will cross the bridge into Matamoros, Mexico to bear witness to the life-threatening living conditions of migrants who have been pushed back into Mexico due to recent inhumane United States policy, illegal under national and international law.
THERE ARE SO MANY NEEDS
We are raising money to provide everything from warm clothes, hygiene products and food to heaters and wagons to carry supplies. All donations of whatever amount will help these children and parents
