Gurung's Ghyaru Community Project

Our family is traveling to Nepal in September to help facilitate an important project benefitting the remote mountain village where Mukhiya grew up until he was 7 years old. Ghyaru, Manang, sits at an elevation of 11,000 ft. in Nepal’s Annapurna region. About 100 of Mukhiya’s relatives live in the village’s 30 homes. None of those homes have running water or toilets, and the nearest water source is about an hour’s walk. Each household spends 2 to 3 hours per day walking up and down the steep terrain to haul water for the day's cooking and cleaning.
Our goal with this project is to bring water to each of those 30 homes so they have access to clean water right outside their front door.
We reached out to local contractors, who provided an estimate of $13,000 to make this happen. In the event that this is cost-prohibitive—or, better yet, that we exceed our goal—we developed a secondary project: Building public toilets for the village would cost about $5,000. The people of Ghyaru village are excited at the prospect of these projects and have committed to working with us, too.
We are hoping to have supplies ordered and delivered to Ghyaru prior to monsoon season, which begins in June. Our early goal of $8,000 by June 1 will support this effort. The project itself is scheduled to begin after we arrive in Nepal, around the end of September/beginning of October.
It means the world to Mukhiya and our whole family to be able to travel back to Nepal this year, which marks the 20th since his move to the US, and to give back to the place he comes from in a way that will improve village life so drastically! We are so appreciative of any donations that our friends, family and supportive community in Minnesota and beyond are willing and able to give to help make this happen.
We have created a Minnesota Non-profit Corporation to help, and all money donated goes directly to these community project(s) we are undertaking in Ghyaru.
