Fa Ma Moda: Help Build Gullah/Geechee Elder's Home

Years ago my mother lost her house to a fire that displaced her from both her home and our family land. As a family, we banded together and rebuilt her home to the best of our ability with limited resources. We have been able to complete roughly 75% of the main construction, but need your assistance in completing the final, most costly 25% of the build.

As a native Gullah/Geechee family, Mama's house sits on rural Low Country land that has tended by our family since and owned by it since Emancipation. Mama's house has always been the heart of our community. Help us not only rebuild her home but also revive the heartbeat of our familial village.

In an climate of gentrification, developer land grabs and urban sprawl, this fundraiser is not only to raise funds; it's also to raise awareness to the plight of we Gullah/Geechee people. I have made the celebration and preservation of all-things Gullah/Geechee my life's work at Harvard. Now, I ask you to please help me do the same at home. Tenki.
