Imagine a group of young voices coming together, not only to sing but to celebrate their local heritage and culture through music. This is the vision behind our project to develop a children’s choir in partnership with the Atitlan Multicultural Academy (AMA) located in the Mayan Highlands, where traditional K’iche, Tz'utujil, and Kaqchikel cultures have survived against extraordinary odds.
Our goal is to provide these children with a platform to express themselves, connect with their community, and explore the richness of music from various traditions. Through this choir, we aim to introduce young singers to a diverse repertoire, ranging from Western Classical music to a cappella harmonies to traditional Guatemalan songs and Spanish-language pop.
Music performed in an ensemble is more than just a melody; it is a powerful force for positive change. Research shows that engaging in musical activities enhances empathy, improves cognitive abilities, and fosters a sense of community. I can personally attest to the transformative power of music, as it changed my own life at a young age.
At just seven years old, I discovered my passion for singing in my local church. Despite initial struggles, I persevered, driven by my love for music and the joy of singing with others. My journey eventually led me to the Saint Thomas Choir of Men and Boys in New York City and Cate School in California, experiences that shaped my character and opened doors I never thought possible.
Music opens up opportunities because it opens us up to our own potential. Every single child should have the chance to become everything they can be.
Now, I invite you to join me in bringing this transformative experience to the children of Guatemala. Your support will enable us to provide musical education, performance opportunities, and a sense of belonging to these young talents. Together, we can empower them to discover their voices, both literally and figuratively, and enrich their lives through music. All funds go directly to programmatic expenses.
Please consider making a donation today to support our children’s choir project in Guatemala. Your contribution, no matter the size, will make a difference. Together, let’s create harmony and opportunity and spread joy through music.
