The orphanages and schools we have visited in Guatemala changed the entire way I think of life. On our first trip Jessa and I both agreed on the ride home from the airport that we were ready to go back...immediately. Since that first trip, there have been two others and each time the desire to return was the same. I sat on a rock behind The Little House of Refuge and reflected on what I was on this earth to do. I decided sitting on that rock that I was here to change lives. That's what these trips do.
We get to tell the children that we love them, care deeply that they are safe and happy, and that we will be back to make sure of that every chance we get.
But more than that, every teenager that I take on these trips gains a new perspective on life and they come back different. They know they also have promises to keep to the children and they realize that their lives in the United States border on ridiculous. I don't say that lightly. It's true, and now they know it.
So, why do I do fundraisers, flock yards with flamingos late at night, host teas, and try to wrangle a bunch of teenagers to help? Because, with God's power I have decided to change lives. WOW (Women for Ophans Worldwide) is in the business of changing lives. We have the privilege of loving children that need to know they are loved and we won't stop, ever.
