Gualala Video

There have been many businesses that have had to close their doors in order to comply with the regulations brought on by Covid-19, in order to help slow the spread of the Coronavirus. During this time of social distancing and self-isolation, many businesses have felt the financial strain, and there has been an uncertainty as to whether or not they will be able to weather the storm, to reopen their doors once the shelter-in-place is lifted.

Gualala Video is one of these businesses. For those of you familiar with our local video store, you know that this little gem in our community has been able to overcome obstacles such as the rise of Netflix, video streaming, and digital movie releases. In a time where “digital kills the video star” our community has been able to retain a little piece of the past, in the form of a video rental store. In what is almost like a time-capsule, patrons can browse the shelves, mingle with other customers, and enjoy free candy while making their selections. This space might be something that many of us have taken for granted, because it is possible that we might not have ever imagined our little movie museum would ever close its doors. But it might.

David isn’t really the type to ask others for help, especially when considering the fact that many other businesses and individuals are facing similar financial strain and uncertainty, but he and his video store have many fans. There are many people that want to see those doors reopen when the time comes.

For those of you who might not have ever had the chance to check out the inventory of Gualala Video, or who have never had a chance to converse with the owner, let me just take a minute to brag. Gualala Video has almost every movie you can imagine, and if it is not in his inventory, Dave will do his best to track it down, or figure out why he doesn’t have it. The video store currently has over 25,000 titles, and he just about knows where and what each one of them are. Talk about a movie nerd. Do you have a VCR? Gualala Video has VHS tapes! An old obscure foreign film from the 60’s? Pretty sure he knows exactly where to find it. You’re looking for a movie, but you can only remember insignificant details from one or two scenes? Bam, he’s got you covered. Can’t remember what the movie is, but pretty sure that the cover art looked like this or that? Dave’ll know what movie you’re looking for! Having trouble figuring out how to wire your home theater system or which cables you need to install your devices? David has always been available with a wide-range of technical support, and has gone as far as to locate obscure old tech, outdated cords, or remotes to help assist his customers.

We’re lucky to have Dave, and we are lucky to have the video store. Let’s help keep it open. Without revenue coming in, Dave could use help paying overhead costs, including rent, utilities, and inventory costs. He has always been very generous, let’s see if we can return the favor.
