I had to get an extension cord for work and I drove down to Elvis Presley Blvd. to the Family Dollar Store. While waiting in line two young boys were buying Ramen Noodles. The younger boy (Davon) asked his brother (Davern) if he could buy a small bag of chips. He said they didn't have the money. So I asked them both to get any bag of chips and a drink and I would pay. Both boys thanked me and shook my hand. I watched the boys leave and walk down Elvis Presley. I asked the ladies working the front of the store if they knew the kids. I was told that they lived in a hotel down the street and we're in the store everyday. I went back to work and I couldn't get the boys out of my head. Went back to the store and left my business card and asked them to give it to the family. The next day the boys father Deandre called me and we set up a meeting. In our meeting I found out that Deandre had been in the Army and was deployed twice to Iraq. That he suffers from P.T.S.S. and was getting help from the VA. That he has three sons ages 12,11 and 8. ( #3 son is Damonate). They have lived in the hotel for two years. Deandre works part time for FedEx. His life was trying to keep a roof over there head and keeping boys fed. I asked them was there food in the room. He said very little. So we went to Walmart and bought small refrigerator, microwave and lots of food. We went back to the room and this is when everything changed for me. 4 people in. 20 foot by 10 foot room. Everything is old and in bad shape. We set everything up and I said to Deandre that I would do everything. I could to get them out of this hotel and into apartment. I would also make sure the boys would have a Christmas. So a drink and chips is now full out help to provide a better life for this family.
