Built in 1918 by Alco's Cooke Locomotive Works in Paterson, NJ, Groveton Paper #5 is a staple in Northumberland NH. Originally bought by cotton manufacturer, J.M. Odell Manufacturing, it was at some point purchased by Groveton Paper and then donated to the Town of Northumberland upon the mill closing in 2008.
Sitting next to the Northumberland Covered Bridge and the Upper Ammonoosuc River for decades, this breathtaking train brings nostalgia to the locals and provides a stunning backdrop for travelers. It has been part of photographic scenery for countless events like prom, semi formal, small weddings, families, etc.
In recent years the maintenance of Groveton Paper #5 has been lackluster. That’s why the Groveton Beautification Committee has taken the lead on completely renovating this historic train before it’s no longer repairable.
Please consider donating to restore one of Northumberland’s last pieces of memorabilia from the mill. If every taxpayer donated $20.00, we would exceed our initial goal and immediately start these renovations. Check donations can be dropped off or mailed to Passumpsic Bank, 40 State Street Northumberland NH 03582, written out to the Groveton Beautification Committee, reference Groveton Paper #5.
We appreciate every member of the Northumberland community, near and far. If donating isn’t in the cards, share this fundraiser, there are so many members of our community that no longer live in the area. Just like every penny counts, every connection counts.
