This page was initially created as a way to allow my friends and family to donate to a cause I care about. I paired this GoFundMe page with an amazon wishlist of Christmas gifts for the kids and house hold needs. After just a week we had almost all of the gifts and a large portion of the money raised! Here is the letter I sent out explaining the cause...
Dear Friends and Family,
I've been living in the Florida Panhandle for almost a year now and my favorite part is not the beautiful beaches, excessive humidity or drive-through liquor stores. No, despite its many wonders I have found something special here which has helped fill a big void in my life. In August, I started working with Anchorage Children's Home mentoring the eight foster children that live in their Group Sibling Home. These kids are AWESOME and if I wasn't working for the Navy full time I'd adopt all of them (don't worry Mom and Dad, I'm only mostly kidding). Moving to a new place and starting my career in the wake of Andrew's loss has been difficult and having these kids in my life has helped me immensely. Whatever love I show them, they give back to me tenfold. With your help, I wanted to return some of the love they've given me.
They've been through a lot, certainly more than most of us have, and they continue to be smart, motivated and lovable. Many of them have been completely separated from their parents with no hope of being reunited and live in this home with one or more of their siblings. Big events for them are things like a trip to Chick-fil-A or a day playing mini golf-- new clothes, books and toys are rare and I've never seen more grateful gift recipients. I may not be in a position to adopt them, but I'm hoping with our huge support network that we can make them feel as loved as I do.
The donation list I've complied is a mix of gifts and things the house needs to keep functioning (bedding, appliances, etc.). Any and all donations are greatly appreciated. If you don't want to purchase an item specifically, a donation to the GoFundMe page will be put towards purchasing the items on the list.
