I am the father of two school children on Bloomington’s Eastside, an immigrant-rich community minutes south of Minneapolis. East Side Mutual Aid is a parent group supporting families in need of food due to the recent instability in our community. Some of our families are on legal pathways to become permanent residents or citizens, but they no longer feel safe enough to go to work or take their children to school. All of the money we raise pays for the groceries we're delivering to neighborhood families. We use the term “mutual aid” because by assisting others, we are also helping ourselves. In the words of Senator Paul Wellstone, “We all do better when we all do better.”
