September 3, 2022 my father, Greg Sadler’s, life was changed forever. That evening he called his sister, asking her to bring him some Pepto Bismol for his stomach ache. When she arrived to his home she saw he was clearly very ill and needed to go to the emergency room, so off they went. After being at the Outer Banks Hospital for only a few hours he was transferred to Chowan hospital, where he was in a coma, immediately put on a ventilator and the doctors contacted his family saying he was in critical condition with only a 5% chance of living. We immediately all rushed up there and then decided we wanted him transferred to ECU Health asap. It was arranged for him to be transferred by helicopter and within an hour we were on the road home to pack a bag and head to Greenville where he was admitted into the ICU and stayed for the next 4 months. In the first 2 weeks he was in the hospital he under went 4 emergency abdominal surgeries (all of which we did know if would make it through or not), they discovered the entire right side of colon was dead and leaking toxins into his body causing all of his organs to fail. After miraculously making it through he was left too swollen to close up, so a wound VAC was placed on his abdomen to wait for it to grow back together and an ileostomy was done. It was over a month before he was awake out of the coma and even then he was still on a ventilator, could not speak or communicate and did not understand what was going on. They eventually preformed a tracheotomy and after nearly 3 months we were able to hear his voice again.
Unfortunately while Greg was in the hospital the disease his mother had been diagnosed with, Pulmonary Fibrosis, progressed much faster than anyone expected so sadly they were not able to say good bye before she passed. Anyone who knows my father knows how much he loved his mother. Not a morning passed that he didn’t go by to see her. He was always referred to as “her favorite”. Their bond was simply unbreakable. He was left absolutely heartbroken by her passing but knew he had came so far.
After learning to walk again in inpatient rehab, in mid December he was given the green light to be able to go home, staying with his daughters to care for his abdominal wound and ostomy and having home health come by once a week.
After getting adjusted to his new life and trying to get back to normal, unfortunately on February 14, 2023 we woke up to the heart breaking news that his daughter, Kirby Sadler, took her life. Kirby had been living in her father’s trailer on and off from the time he was in hospital until her last days. She had wanted to help her father by fixing up his home, she tried her best, however it was in terrible condition to begin with and her projects were never completed. After hospital bills, funeral expenses, and only being able to live off social security Greg has been left with a huge financial burden. He has been living with family members for months and is ready to go back to his home but he simply needs some help to be able to make it home again.
If you would like to or have the means to consider helping him get back on his feet after so much loss and financial burden all donations will go directly towards fixing his home and medical bills. Please know that every donation is immensely appreciated. Thank you to everyone for all the love and support through out the last few months ❤️
