Help Us Grow Food, Build Soil, and Empower Women in Rwanda
For 18 years, the Green and Gold Community Garden has been growing food in service of others—right here in Edmonton, and thousands of kilometres away in Rwanda.

We are a completely volunteer-run, land-based learning community tending a 2.5-acre vegetable garden and fruit orchard on the University of Alberta’s South Campus. Twice each week during the growing season, we sell the produce we grow at our on-site market. Every dollar raised goes directly to Tubahumurize, a women’s organization in Rwanda.

Our garden provides nearly 75% of Tubahumurize’s annual funding.
That funding supports women who have experienced violence and marginalization by offering:
  • Trauma counselling and coping education
  • Vocational skills training
  • Opportunities for economic independence

Why We’re Fundraising
Over the past five years, we’ve been transitioning our garden to a minimal-till system—an approach that protects soil health while producing more food with less water and less physical strain on volunteers. This transition has already:
  • Reduced water usage
  • Prevented soil erosion
  • Improved soil health
  • Increased yields
To continue this work sustainably, we now need better tools.

The Tool That Makes This Possible
We are fundraising to purchase a BCS 749 two-wheeled walking tractor - the ideal machine for a small-scale, soil-conscious garden like ours.

Unlike large tractors, this compact, walk-behind power unit allows us to:
  • Care for our soil without heavy compaction
  • Reduce wear and tear on aging volunteer bodies
  • Maintain productivity without returning to destructive tillage

To fully support our minimal-till system, we are also seeking three essential attachments:

Flail mower – to manage cover crops efficiently

Rotary plough – to move decomposed mulch onto planting beds

Precision depth tiller – to prepare beds with minimal soil disturbance

Together, these tools allow us to grow more food, protect our soil, and sustain our volunteers for the long term.

Why This Matters
Every improvement to our garden directly increases our ability to support Tubahumurize and the women they serve.

Better tools mean:
  • Healthier soil
  • Higher yields
  • More funds raised

How Your Donation Helps
All funds raised will go toward purchasing the walking tractor and attachments. If we don’t reach our full goal, we’ll purchase as much equipment as possible and continue fundraising for the rest. If we exceed our goal, surplus funds will be used to buy additional tools that further support our minimal-till system

The Green and Gold Community Garden is not a registered charity, so we are unable to issue tax receipts—but every contribution has a direct, tangible impact.

Thank you for helping us grow change!
