We are excited to start a new organization that provides online legal advocacy and social support to refugees and asylum-seekers in Greece. We hope you’ll read about our work and consider donating to our Winter Emergency Fund.
The Situation on the Ground
People fleeing war, violence, and persecution are stranded in Greece with no way forward.
Currently, there are an estimated 50,000 asylum-seekers in Greece, a main point of entry into Europe. Approximately 16,000 of these individuals are stuck on the Greek islands, including Lesbos and Samos, where they live in overcrowded camps in dire conditions. Fights break out each day, violence against women is normalized, and children as young as 10 attempt suicide. The camps are under army control and individuals, including minors, are detained arbitrarily.
Making matters worse, winter has arrived. People take shelter from freezing temperatures in tents, containers, or abandoned buildings where they don’t have access to electricity, water, or proper clothing. The medicine needed for winter-related illnesses is often inaccessible or expensive.
We are the founders of HAQNA (meaning "our right" in Arabic)—an online legal and social platform for asylum-seekers in Greece. Through the platform, we prepare individuals for their interviews or meetings with respective asylum entities, clarify legal procedures, and combat widespread misinformation. As part of our efforts to establish HAQNA, we are headed back to Greece for the month of February. We’ll be busy organizing know-your-rights campaigns, prepping our clients for their interviews, and connecting with our stakeholders on the ground.
How You Can Help: Our Winter Emergency Fund
Our work focuses on the most vulnerable refugees and asylum-seekers: people who get little or no humanitarian aid. During our February trip, we want to distribute goods that are necessary to survive the winter: coats, warm clothes, closed-toe shoes, socks and medicine. We hope you’ll consider contributing to our winter emergency fund which will help cover the cost of these goods.
Thanks for all the support of our work so far! We can’t wait to share more information about HAQNA within the coming weeks when our website and app become available. In the meantime, we’ll be busy in the field.
