Mary Moore - Healing Support Fund

Mary Moore, has been a cornerstone in Northern California civil rights and justice activism for over 5 decades. Her unyielding efforts have touched the lives of our community here in Sonoma County CA and have rippled far into the corners of nations and communities across our globe. https://www.pressdemocrat.com/news/8878121-181/sonoma-stories-peace-justice-activist-mary?view=AMP

At 83, Mary could use our help now. As Mary’s 2 grand daughters Emily, 36 and Raina, 23  we are asking for support to help Mary be comfortable during the winter and long into the future by making some very necessary home improvements. Mary had a 5 hour surgery under anesthesia last week that was successful. However, along with an intense surgery such as this always comes side issues, weakness being a serious one here. The surgery has left her body very taxed. We, her grandaughters, Raina and Emily have come together as Mary’s last 2 able bodied relatives to facilitate this and ensure Mary’s comfort and healing.

We are clear on a schedule of improvements to support her recovery and allow her to be at home where her spirits can be highest and help her recovery process. Without some very necessary elements we need to put in place winter could be extremely difficult and could actually counter act our attempts to get her on track to heal.  At 83 Mary has led a very independent life but right now she needs to be cared for and save energy for healing and recovery.

To be quite honest, all 3 of Mary’s children have passed and we are the only 2 grandchildren/blood relatives that can support her emotionally and physically. As some of you who are close to us will remember, we lost our mother Diane, Mary’s eldest child 12 years ago when Raina was 8 and Emily 22. Those days were sad, scary and difficult to say the least.  We have remained by each others sides and supported one another to the best of our abilities. I know our Mother would be proud. It is times like this when we feel her lose the strongest. We do not have parents to ask so we are asking our community to lend us a hand in supporting our grandmothers comfort in her Wise year of 83.

Emily has resigned from her position in Los Angeles and has relocated back to Sonoma County and will be Mary’s primary caretaker. It is important to us all that Mary can be at home where she is most comfortable and deserves to be. This way Mary can remain at home and we can accomplish the work to be done while having essential bonding time in the comfort of her own home. Raina commutes from Santa Cruz on weekends.

Our Goal is to raise at least $5,000 in order to get her home into a safe condition so she can remain there. Us grandchildren feel this is attainable but we do need support in order to help be in a position to help her. As winter approaches we would like to perform some home improvements for the forest cabin that Mary has lived in since 1970. Improvements such as replacing wooden steps and walkways that have become unsafe or broken, lighting pieces to light the path and rails to hold onto. Plumbing maintenance and roof repair are among 2 of the more serious tasks at hand. Here is a list of the types of things and help we can use if your inclined to offer help that way.

Electrical/Internet/cable consultation and help. (Need to set up a second tv and phone downstairs, I believe there are existing cable outlets, I just don’t know exactly how to do it so it doesn’t mess up existing setup.
Yard cleaning days
Target or Home Depot/Lowe’s gift cards for improvement supplies
There are many other detailed organization projects we will be tackling that will bring other needs such as cleaning supplies, shelving needs,
As a family and extended close knit community we are confident we can set Mary up for a speedy comfortable recovery. Please contact us with any questions thoughts or suggestions on resources to help.

Please feel free to leave comments and create a dialogue about how Mary has impacted your life or those you care about. I’m sure it would help her healing to read through kind words from the community she loves and lives for ❤️
