La Hoya Community Fund
Donation protected
About The Project:
La Hoya (the Hole) is the poorest community in Granada, Nicaragua. People here survive by working seven days a week at the city’s landfill located next to their community. By collecting recyclable materials, these workers earn around 2000 Cordoba a month, the equivalent of 50 euros or 55 dollars.
What we are doing:
Beach Cleanup
1) A community member of La Hoya is being trained to take care of trash bags and gather interested workers at the landfill
2) Local community members with trucks are volunteering to transport interested workers to the lakeshore
3) Workers who participate in the beach cleanup will be paid 90 Cordoba per hour ($2.40 USD per hour, or 3x what they normally earn and $1 more than Nicaragua’s minimum wage)
4) Tourists from hostels are invited to participate and donate in an opportunity to help the community they are visiting.
Garden:
There are about 30 families (80-150 people) living in La Hoya. Through this project we are assembling a package of Squash, Papaya and Yuca (Cassava) seeds, twine, and stakes for each family to make their own garden as a source of food.
What has already been done?
At present a local community member brings meals to the residents here twice a week. And there has been a project to make sure everyone living here has a roof, wall, and a floor in their home. The ones who do not have this are offered repairs of their current home or the option of a new one. Over the past year donations funded 80+ homes that were constructed at a cost of $750 each. All leftover funds from this project will be donated to the previous project linked above.
