Go the Extra Mile – Support Lithuanian Diaspora Youth

On 13–15 March 2026, in Eastbourne, UK, we are organising “Go the Extra Mile” – a three-day experiential programme bringing together Lithuanian diaspora youth from the United Kingdom and Spain.

This is more than an event.
It is a 16 km symbolic walk across the Seven Sisters cliffs, combined with educational, cultural, and community-building activities focused on civic responsibility, resilience, leadership, and connection to Lithuania.

Not just to remember – but to continue

The name and spirit of “Go the Extra Mile” come from the words of Marius Ulevicius, a co-founder, leader, and long-term volunteer of the Gintarėliai camp community. We chose to honour his words by turning them into action.

16 March is not only Marius’s birthday, but also Book Smugglers’ Day (Knygnešių diena) in Lithuania. In many ways, Marius embodied the spirit of a 21st-century book smuggler — someone who believed in carrying language, identity, and values across borders. He strongly supported the idea of creating a safe, meaningful environment for Lithuanian children growing up abroad, helping them stay connected to their roots and build sustainable relationships within the diaspora.

Although Marius is no longer with us, his legacy lives on through the films he created and the community he helped build. As a professional videographer, he captured countless moments of camp and community life — memories that continue to inspire new generations.

This year, our initiative grows further, welcoming Lithuanian youth from Spain, proving that when there is a genuine desire to stay connected, distance does not matter — every mile can be walked.

Why are we fundraising?

Many participants are students and young volunteers. As the project becomes international, travel costs (flights, trains, local transport), accommodation, and basic logistics become a real barrier.

We want to ensure that financial limitations do not prevent motivated young people from taking part in this meaningful experience.

How will the funds be used?

Funds raised will help cover:

travel costs for participants (flights, trains, local transport),

venue hire and basic infrastructure,

meals during the programme,

safe outdoor and educational activities,

civic preparedness and resilience workshops.

Who are we?

The event is initiated by the UK Lithuanian Diaspora Youth Club “Gintarėliai”, a generation that grew up through Lithuanian camps and community activities and is now stepping into leadership, volunteering, and responsibility within the diaspora.

This stage of life is critical. As young people begin studies, careers, and independent lives, maintaining their connection to the community requires real support. By investing now, we help ensure continuity and inspiration for the next generation.

Why does your support matter?

Your support:

helps young people remain connected to their community,

strengthens an active and responsible Lithuanian diaspora,

invests in future leaders who inspire younger children and families.

Even a small donation makes a meaningful difference.

Thank you for supporting diaspora youth and helping us go the extra mile — together.
