Hello, My name is Shelly Clark. I am founding a community youth singing group for children grades 3-12 in our region of Butte, Ramsey, Anaconda, Whitehall Montana and beyond. It is called the Summit Valley Singers. I am an experienced and passionate choral music teacher with 40 years of teaching experience at the K-12 level. My piano and voice studio has been active and successful in Butte for 10 years.
Mission Statement: Sing. Ascend. Reach. Summit Valley Singers provides a group vocal music experience for children in grades 3-12 to develop a social and emotional connection by singing quality music and to build character and optimism in the youth of our area.
Objectives of the Summit Valley Singers:
- Building Character for Community Leadership and Participation
- Singing in Unison and in Harmony - unison, call/response, ostinato, partner songs, rounds, part songs
- Learning to decipher and understand the musical language
- Developing Healthy Vocal Habits - proper breathing, posture, use of the vocal mechanism, vocal health
- Provide A Unique Creative Outlet for Children in our Communities
The group will meet on Mondays during the school year (September 2024-April 2025) on Mondays at First Presbyterian Church in Butte. If there are enough singers interested, the group may be split into a grade 3-grade 6 group, and a grade 7-12 group. It would be a non-auditioned group so any child who has a desire to sing well can participate. There would be a session fee of $120 per singer for Sept-Dec and another session fee for $120 Jan-April. Sibling discounts for households with more than one child participating would be offered. Partial scholarships may be offered if donors are generous. There would be a brief interview prior to admission to the group as well as a signing of a code of conduct. There would be an attendance standard as well.
This effort would require engagement from the parents in terms of taking turns chaperoning rehearsals, taking attendance, and help at the concerts with non-musical tasks. I am also seeking supporting and funding partners for this endeavor, if you or your organization is interested in contributing in-kind services or monetary assistance.
The funds raised will be used to provide:
- stipends for the director and accompanists and guest musicians
- choral sheet music for the singers
- copying and office related expense
To my knowledge, there are only three community children's choirs active full time in Montana at this time. This would be a great opportunity to offer the children in our area. Thank you for your consideration!
Sincerely, Shelly Clark
