Many people would like to see another mural on the 3,800-square-foot schoolyard retaining wall on Bain Avenue. In case you missed it, the last one was painted in 1975…time for a redo!
Initiated by the Bain Honour Canoe Crew, the Bain Avenue Mural (BAM) Project is not simply a mural. It is an expansive art installation that will provide a platform for Indigenous cultural expressions, histories and storytelling, and will promote dialogue about contemporary Indigenous issues.
We are grateful to be working with acclaimed artist and historian Philip Cote, who will be designing and implementing the mural, and who is also working with Withrow/Quest students and teachers to explore the themes of the mural. We are thankful to have the guidance of Wisdom Keeper Pauline Shirt and the support of the Urban Indigenous Education Centre. With the further support of the TDSB and
the Withrow Parent Council, the installation of the mural is planned to be completed by fall 2022.
Our organizing group is made up of Bain Apartments Co-op members and Withrow/Quest School parents and staff. We are a community of people passionate about the power of art to transform, inform and inspire. Our mission is inspired by specific calls to action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, and our vision is to promote Indigenous-settler reconciliation and healing through arts education. This includes supporting the Indigenous education initiatives at Withrow and Quest Schools by providing learning opportunities that explore Indigenous-settler relations. Our goal is for students, parents and caregivers, and community members to engage in the process in a way that brings the themes of the mural alive, and builds capacity for intercultural understanding, empathy and mutual respect.
Funding for this project has been gratefully received from an Ontario Arts Council Artists in Communities and Schools grant, community events, the Withrow Home and School Association, and this GoFundMe campaign. The BAM Project organizing group will also be submitting a formal application to the 2022 Street Art Toronto (StART) Partnership Program that funds murals in Toronto.
