Great North Run 2024 for The Foyle Hospice
Inspired by my friends last year, I’ve decided to take on the Great North Run Half Marathon in Newcastle, England on 8th September this year! I’ve decided to do it for charity as there’s no way I’ll make it round without some motivation, so I’ll be raising money for the Foyle Hospice back home
My granda was a patient in the hospice back in 2011 and still to this day I remember the calming, caring and comforting atmosphere provided by the staff and facilities there. As I was so young it has been so important that I remember him in that environment.
He is one of the 21,000 people the hospice has cared for since opening their doors, providing inpatient, community and day care, along with bereavement support, showing that the kindness does not stop once a loved one has passed away.
The facts that I have read over the years I find quite sobering, here’s some that stick with me:
- All services provided are free of charge
- 1 day home visit costs the hospice £78
- 24 hour care in the Inpatient Unit costs the hospice £720
- Over 60% of the funds are from the local community
- There are currently only 9 beds in the hospice for patients all over the west of Northern Ireland
Living in Leeds has meant that I don’t make it to many of the fundraising events that as a family we’ve done for many years. So I’ve decided to run for this charity as I know how much of an impact this money makes and that they need support now more than ever. Please donate what you can, they’ve got a massive fundraising goal, but with all the costs, you can see why!
